Well it’s finally here. Our brief off season is over and we get to enjoy the first grand slam of the year. There are a couple names I’m looking forward to watching this year, especially out of the younger crop of players.
Milos Raonic just took out Federer in Brisbaine so he should be coming in with confidence. I also think we are going to continue to see big performances from Nick Kyrgios, Borna Coric, and Thanasi Kokkanakis. I’m currently watching Noah Rubin play the 17th seed Benoit Paire and I’m very impressed with what I’m seeing from Rubin who has just taken the first set.
It is also Lleyton Hewitt’s last grand slam so I will be sad to see such a great champion go.
Out of the top players, I’m expecting to see Djokovic and Federer continue their good form. Hopefully we will see a resurgence and second week appearance from Nadal. I also expect to see Murray and Wawrinka make their way deep into the draw.
I’m exited to see how the two weeks unfold so stay tuned with me late into the night as we experience tennis down under! Happy Australian Open from My Side of the Net!
UPDATE: Noah Rubin took out the 17th seed Benoit Paire in three tie break sets.
There are some other great first round matches to keep an eye on tonight:
Rafael Nadal (ESP) vs. Fernando Verdasco (ESP), Jerzy Janowicz (POL) vs. John Isner (USA), Jack Sock (USA) vs. Taylor Fritz (USA), and Ernests Gulbis (LAT) vs. Jeremy Chardy (FRA).
Another under the radar player to keep an eye out for: Denis Kudla.
